You are correct, however the return pump in most configurations adds flow to the DT, and therefore is part of your calculations to determine how many times over your interflow of the DT is.

Try to get as much flow as possible for the type of reef you may have. Different corals have different requirements. The coral will usually tell you if things are good or not.

Here is a thread from a while back. It'll give you an idea of what people are running. I think 40x is a good place to start. You can increase from there depending on the needs of your corals.

yes , you are correct as well, my point is to understand the difference between the two

I run a Dart 3200 GPH on a 4 way closed loop for internal but only 600 GPH for my return on my 75 Gal. Had to take my LPS out though they did not like it at all my zoe's don't mind the flow though.
