Try moving it to a partially shaded location where it doesn't get any direct light until it heals.

It probably too much light. But it also might be stinging from a neighbouring LPS. Who are its neighbours?

neighbouring are 2 hammer head's but 3 to 4 inches off.

I'm going to put it about 20 inches deep and se for a while

the thing is that some say it needs bright light, som say thy gro in nature at up to 20 feet, so less licht thy need.

as bright might be the prob. we try less

None of my Favias, Trachyphyllia, Symphyllia, and Lobophyllias like much light. I have them all on the sand partially shaded by other corals or off to the side out of the direct light of the halides. My lights are 250w DE 20K with electronic ballasts, so they don't put out a huge amount of PAR either.

The randomness of the white spots make me think that the hammer may be responsible. I've seen sweeper tentacles from both my Favia and anchora (hammer) reach 6 - 8 inches in length.
My Favia is about the same depth under 400w MH and is one of my hardiest corals.
Have a look during the night for sweeper tentacles. They will still probably come out even after you move the Favia.
3 weeks is still a relatively new addition. I have found that the corals eventually get used to one another. If you run activated carbon, they may constantly be at war.
