yeah ive read mixed opinions on feeding. a few times a week seems to be the common recommendation and id say they get 3 feedings a week. entirely possible they are overfed but my impression with overfeeding was that they regurge foods they are unable to process.

Actually there has been no real speculation made as to the cause of why BTA's lose their bubble tips.

I dont feed mine at all really...Mine seem to get enough food between my generous feedings and the clowns, who sometimes take them food....tentacles are short and bubbly.

Really, they require some pretty intense light, so I would suspect that they get most of their sustenance from light. EDIT: Like any coral though, they will like to be fed. My open brain eats quite a bit (though I've cut back since my tank is overrun with 'pods right now).
