Who has a Wavebox on a tank less than 100 gallons?

I just put a nano wavebox in my 100gallon tonight. Im getting plenty of wave at the lowest pump power setting. I would guess its moving water 3/4" at both ends. The only wave action I get is on a very fast pulse.

What really surprised me is I tried the box in the front corner where there are no obstructions.. then tried it in the back corner where its basically pointed smack into the reef rock and the wave is just as strong. I figured the rock would block it somewhat but it doesnt. Im going to leave mine in the back where its not seen much.

The impeller was getting stuck on the side of the little tunnel the water shoots out of. We took it apart and pushed the pump back a little.. hopefully thats not going to be an ongoing problem.

I have a question for those of you that have wavemakers.. were you able to do away with any "flow" pumps once you put the wavemaker in?

Im running 4 nanostreams and one big tunze and now the wavebox.

I asked the Rep on RC about having a wavebox in a 30 inch cube (70 gallons)......... said it would work.

Oh I am getting a wave! That's not the issue. I just find that anything within about a 12" radius of the Wavebox is getting a thrashing because the pump is so strong.

Hey Christie, how close were your SPS that got the flesh blown off? If I put the Wavebox on the same side as the overflow there are several SPS that will be within 6-8" of the pump opening on the Wavebox. I'm thinkin that's too close. I could slide that rock structure over though.

Shelley, I think the wavebox is designed for supplemental flow so you need extra pumps. That being said, previously I was running 2 6060s and a 6045 in my tank while currently I'm just running one 6060 (less corals than previously and I've been lazy about getting everything back in the tank) and everything is groovy.

Myka, the coral in question was about 3" from the wavebox. I'd say 6" is your minimum distance. Just have a look at the coral, if its polyps are being plastered back by the wave, its probably too close. Unless of course its a milli, those things love crazy strong flow

I'd still look into the jumper thing. at 15V the pump will run a lot less strongly than at 24V I just don't know if Tunze condones that.

Tunze literature clearly states that the Wavebox is only meant for supplemental flow and that primary flow must be provided by other means.

I'd ask the Tunze forum on RC about lowering the voltage but I suspect that that is the way to go since the ability to vary voltage is built into their newer streams/nanostreams and even the osmolator.

I know for a fact that the 6101 transformer runs at 15V and 24V and possibly 12V. It displays a range on the back I just can't recall. The 6101 transformers are used on the waveboxes which actually use 6201 series pumps I believe. Like you said tho these pumps are intended to run a bit differently so I'd ask but the 6101 stream can certainly run at 15V.

Thanks Christie, my SPS are about 6-8" away from the Wavebox. The Mille is loving it (of course haha), but the Birdnests and Stylo aren't impressed...polyps are mostly retracted. Maybe they will get used to it?

The stylo will likely get used to it (I had two and both mine eventually liked it, they were kind of crabby at first tho). The birdsnest might but they like more indirect flow, IMO.

The jumpers slide into the transformer not the controller =) If you decide to try that out fire me a pm and I'll mail it to you.
