He is probably in the back chamber.
I had one living in my sump for months that went down my overflow before I saw him in there one day. Shine a light down there as he is probably hiding under your pump of filters.

Yup have had many dive into the back before I got it blocked....be sure to check a few times before you give up fish can hide in there amazingly well

A lot of people use egg crate or you can buy a "fish saver" from www.mediabaskets.com . The egg crate should work pretty good and is a bunch cheaper then the ladder
