Might be a mute point and this is just fyi. Group buys like this are the reason there is no distributor for vortech here. So in a way you are contributing to the problem. Not trying to start anything....just telling it like it is.

I agree, support your local shop or soon they won't be there at all. I can appreciate trying to save a few bucks, but personally I would rather spend a little extra and have the peace of mind knowing that if something went wrong and I needed service I had somewhere to take the item without having to ship it off somewhere.

Good luck I just picked up an mp20 about 3 weeks ago. I love cranking it up and watch it clean off all my rocks.

Note I was going to get into a group buy through another forum but with the price plus conversion and shipping it was less to buy it frrom JL

There are a couple of Canadians carrying the Vortechs. I'm all for supporting local vendors but for some reason many of them refuse to budge on pricing whereas US vendors seem much more willing to offer a discount. I do plan on approaching the Canadian vendors as well to see if they will give us some discount. I don't mind spending $20 or even $30 more on something if I can get it locally but if it is closer to $80 or $100 difference or even more in some cases I will go where I can get the better price.

After exchange etc. the difference on these Vortech pumps is probably something like $65 or $70. That's a fair savings. If the Canadian guys are willing to come down in price by $40 or $50 I would be happy to buy from them.

Retailers are bound by the msrp pricing rules as set by the supplier, if they are caught selling for less they can be cut-off, If a retailer sells at too slim a margin they can ill afford to offer any kind of customer service to back up the product. If you do a group buy out of the US and someone has a issue where does it go for service?

Ecotechs customer services are quite good in the warranty respect. They will require you to ship the unit in for service if its a big problem.but if its a small part such as a wetside magnet they will send the magnet to you and all you do is open the unit up and replace it yourself. Also it doesnt matter where the unit is, or if it is 2nd hand as long as its still under warranty Ecotech will service it.

Buying from LFS is what i usually do, but for bigger more pricer units, i believe everyone likes to shop around for the biggest bargain.

Id probably be interested in an Mp-40 depending on price.

Would a 40 be too much flow for a 4 foot with a sandbed?

Totally get the MP40, I run an MP20 in my RSM 34g and it might be a little much when on full but I can turn it down to level that I like around 80%

MP40 will allow you more topend then the 20 but you can turn it down to to about what the 20 would be at around 70% - 80%

That's what I plan to use it in. I had some correspondence with Steve from Ecotech and he felt the 40 would be great for a 4 foot tank. Apparently the flow from these is fairly wide and gentle. It looks to me like they use a much larger propeller that turns more slowly to move water rather than a small fast spinning one like the Koralias etc.

Dan at Aquatic Addictions has come through for us. If we can get a total of 12 units he will do the following pricing for us:

MP40w $449.95
MP20 $314.95
Battery Backup $197.99

Dan will want a 50% deposit. I'm just waiting to hear from him as to how long it will take to get them in.

So I will start things off as I am in for an MP40. 11 more to go...
