Im not sure how to upgrade for good stuff either... do you just randomly get stuff after so many experience points?

thats what I'm hoping, because the brute I picked keeps keeps getting it handed to him from people with knifes and swords.

Yeah, I started out the same too.. getting knifed, clubbed, and mauled by bears and foxes.
Eventually you get some weapons, keep at it.
