Is on the hose leading into my sump within the sock. Looks like algae except that it was hard. Was not there a few days ago when I changed that sock.

Stomatella would be my guess. It's like a snail with only half a shell, like a hard cap.

Amazing it made it though the grate......is it beneficial to the tank in that I leave it on the hose...or move it elsewhere in the sump?

If it is a stomatella, it is a good guy. I`d leave him be to find his own way.

I vote chiton, you can kind of see its armor plating along the back. Of course I could be wrong
