Tangs tend not to do well in small tanks. He may of already been sick, hard to say for sure, but for future reference if you want to keep a tang happy keep one in a 90g tank or larger.

Sorry you lost your tang.

Please do not attempt another until you get a larger tank.
40 is too small. I am surprised a lfs sold you one.

You might want to do a water change to ensure that your parameters do not change.
Also observe for ich. You might want to start feeding garlic and selcon soaked food.
