Personal preference. I dont think I would put fake plants in my saltwater tank, but if thats what you like, then go for it. I also dont understand why people would pay $500 for a black tang, but they do. For me the draw to saltwater was the colorful fish and to put a black fish in the tank kinda defeats the purpose. But thats just my interpretation of what is appealing.

I have to somewhat agree with the black tang comment, I fell in love SW fish because of how colourful most of them are, and I too used to think it defeated the purpose to have white or black SW fish.

It's funny how as time goes on your outlook changes. Just a few days ago I was preaching about how I only wanted really colourful fish for my new tank. However this angelfish changed my mind

For a fish that is called "Black velvet" I think he's quite stunning.

*sings*
Black Velvet in that little boys smile, black velvet in that slow southern style"

Ahem

I think if it's a biotype tank, there are some "decent" silk plants that could work as a sort of temporary thing for sea grass etc. maybe in a seahorse tank?

Does that make any sense?

Moving to the lounge, as I dont really know where it belongs.

FWIW, I sometimes thought the same until I read a thread somewhere about fake things in a reef tank. This one lady who was a nurse in a cancer ward, said after a day at her job, coming home to her little saltwater tank, with its fake plants and bubbling treasure chest and so on, being her release from the day or something like that.

It was something that you had to read to put things in perspective. Kind of like one had to be there at the time.

Yep - I have some fake stuff in my seahorse tank cause they need something to hitch to.

Having said that, I have macros in my QT tank waiting to go in to start replacing the fake stuff All in good time...
