I'd say personal preference. Why do some people keep FOWLR tanks? Why do some people keep reef?

i remember there was a restaurant that open up by where i lived. picture my horror when i was told this place also had a SW set up. i imagined at least something that wasn't a complete eye sore since it was a restaurant. but instead i came to find a mish-mash of colored FW gravel, plastic FW plants all over the place, with HUGE chunks of drift wood, and a few pieces of the deadest LR iv seen here and there. and to top it all off the tank was a 300G acrylic tank that was so scratched it made it hard to see through. it was hard to even see the fish at the opposite end of the tank.

It's a way to start into sw. I cycled my tank from fw to brack to salt with my ol' green spotted puffer. Stayed that way until I sold the puffer and researched more about marine environement and reef tank.

Personal preference. I dont think I would put fake plants in my saltwater tank, but if thats what you like, then go for it. I also dont understand why people would pay $500 for a black tang, but they do. For me the draw to saltwater was the colorful fish and to put a black fish in the tank kinda defeats the purpose. But thats just my interpretation of what is appealing.
