How do people keep their sumps so clean? Mine does not look like that!

I would bet money that picture is from when the sump was brand new.

Ya after a couple weeks, the sump starts to look pretty dank. I find the light over the sump/refugium makes it SO much worse.

For the recirculating models, what does this mean: "Allows the user to input the exact amount of water desired to be skimmed. "?

I assume this is just another way of saying that I can hook up any sized pump for its intake.

I had a model up from the one you are looking at Samw, and I loved it. I then upgraded again to a 250, which I'm using right now, and also like it. They do a decent job, and don't tend to have any issues that I've experienced.

one of the causes is high calcium/alk levels.

vinegar is worked the best for me to disolve calcium deposits from the impellers and other submerged parts.
