You might want to find a new LFS to buy from. You can use your 'dead' rock (Hope you didn't pay too much for it). Add some pieces of live rock and yes eventually the dead rock will have life in it. Do a proper tank cycle...if you don't wait it out you'll likely kill the fish you put in . Do research, take it slow, and I'm sure you'll have a nice little tank on your hands.

actualy using dead rock can be a good way to start. It would alow you to get hitchhiker free rock and sead it with a good chunk of rock. takes a bit longer to get everything going but it limits the unknowens.
