Default cycle dry rock?

just wondering if you left out rock that used to be live rock, and then put it in a tank that has live rock already cycled in it, does it go through a ammonia cycle or just become seeded from the other rock? pretty much just wondering if i will get a ammonia spike if dry live rock dry for 4 weeks, will cause a problem in my tank, or if i should just get a bucket and cycle it? anyone know from experince, thanks in advance.

Depends on how much dry rock you add compared to how much cycled LR you have. We added two 5 pound dry pieces to our 230g which has 200 pounds of cycled LR and didn't notice anything. Someone else I know added about 15-20 pounds of dry rock to their 40 pounds of LR they had and their tank went through an ammonia spike.
