Default vortech

I just bought one about a week ago, setup was painless, and i'm very happy. It does make a bit of a groaning noise,as i'm running mine in the pulsing mode.

sounds like manufacturer defects. I'd recommend taking it back to whoever sold it to you or deal with the manufacturer if there's no in store warranty.

I screwed up my vortech's impeller because I ran it on the wrong glass thickness. An exchange of the impeller/prop part got it working back to normal. (ran it on 1/4" when it was 3/8" glass or whatever is the next largest thickness)
