My Xenia does the same thing, so it isn't just you. I'm not overly concerned about it because there seems to be plenty of it.

If you really want to experience something...haul a piece of that dead section out and give it a sniff. Few things get me like that particular smell...man...

Haha, yeah it's a killer stink....leathers are a smelly coral as well.

Another possibility is your skimmer? Xenia like a more nutrient rich water. What skimmer if any are you running. What lighting? Do you feed your corals? Wish mine would melt away. Its kinda a pita to have to go in and save my other corals from being swallowed by it every two months.

Xenia does this in nature too, so its not uncommon. It will grow back. I have heard many leathers and softies such as xenia use a lot of iodine. Regular water changes takes care of this but you may want to test for it. I would not does iodine though unless you test for it because it can be very bad for your tank.
