Full time firefighter for the City of Calgary. Currently working toward my Company Officer exam at the end of this month so I can make even more money for sleeping (that trumps getting paid for doing nothing).

Although when we do have to work, it can be all out with no breaks until the job is done no matter what time of day, holidays included. It's kind of an all or nothing job. More than once I've stood out in the cold in a foot of water, half soaked, caked in ice, manning a hoseline in the wee hours of the morning (even on one memorable Christmas eve). Or the other extreme, wearing sixty pounds of fully insulated gear and working my butt off on the hottest summer day. But I love it, and wouldn't want to be doing anything else.

Best job description I heard was: we're there to un-F*** somebody else's F*** up.

I am an overpaid Government worker too......

I'm an Environmental Protection Officer for the Province.

I conduct inspections of approved and registered facilities in the Edmonton area and also travel north as far as Athabasca and east to the border. I ensure compliance with the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act and it's Regulations and Codes of Practice as they relate to facilities like refineries, foundries, cement plants, asphalt plants, gas plants, and on and on and on....

I also conduct inspections of unapproved operations like maintenance garages, drycleaners, etc to ensure compliance with the Act in regard to hazardous waste disposal and hazardous recyclable disposal and their storage.

We follow up on public complaints regarding odour, haz waste disposal, and you name it... if it's environment, I'm pretty much on it......

I'm a technical specialist for a software engineering firm that specializes in realtime-IT for infrastructure (think electrical transmission, oil/gas pipelines, and water pipelines). (I'm not actually allowed to publicly name the company I work for.) Our customers include most of North America's municipal drinking water and most pipelines in North America and some international. We do things like control, monitoring, leak detection, and flow measurement. If we were to screw something up, it's CNN. We try hard not to.

PS. Oh yeah, we're getting into weather for realtime highway updates. Those little weather stations you see on the side of the QE2? Those are ours.

I'm a Locomotive Engineer with 30 years in now. Also working as a Traffic Coordinator which is sorta the railway equivalent of an Air Traffic Controller.
Someone wanted more pics so here's a few I've collected over the years.

Any other rails on the board?

I like this one. Parking on the tracks... what could possibly go wrong?
