Default Live rock

If a person only wanted to keep live rock, with a sand bend, no fish, how much light would be required? Would you need a protein skimmer? Filtration?

IMO you can keep the rock and sand without the skimmer and light (maybe a heater). The problem with this is when you drop by someones house, like Tony's, and you see all his cool stuff, and there you are with this cycled tank and nothing in it, and heck whats one fish...oh and just a couple of...

Actually you can't do that

heheh, well, my thought was this. I can't afford to go all out right now, but I thought I'd collect up the things I need. Seeing is the rock is pretty much the most expensive thing, I was going to collect it and set up my 20g untill I had enough to fill my 90g (well, not fill but you know what i mean) I just wan't sure what I needed to keep it going/alive.

If one has time and not money you could also try making some of the rock. It is simple, cheap and it supplies other reefers endless amusment when they laugh...er...look at your tank. it is like 22 cents a pound to make.

I can give you some tips if need be.

Whaase, put a heater, a power head and a small NO actinic light on the 20 gall and it will give you nice rock.

If your going to take your time I would definitly make my own rock or purchase some ex-live rock like the Caribsea. I would probably make my own that way you can make some really nice structures and shapes 8) . Then all you would have to do is get a pound or two of Live Rock and a cup or two of live sand to seed the tank.

Here are some links on making your own LR, if you live in an apartment i'll tell you out of experience it's a pain in the a@@ to do. It's not hard to do just takes a lot of water changes to lower the ph when your curing the rock, before you even think of putting into your tank. It was kind of a fun project but in the end found someone getting out of the hobby and bought some real stuff for 2$ a pound.
