Wendell that is a tough question because I think a lot depends on what one interprets as success and what you kind of reef you keep, some require more science than others. That said I do at least sort of agree with the 60/40 ratio. It starts with science and testing but over time you get a feel for it and can often tell when some elements need topping up just by looking. So yeah I think it starts with science and slowly becomes an art.

I don't have an artistic bone in my body. 100% science. I'm not sure if I've had success yet, however.

I feel the same way about my own reef & husbandry skills.

There's a lot of science but I think almost everyone on the forums has some personal feelings towards their reefkeeping. I think that lots of reefkeepers are "artists" and don't even know it. This is coming from a "bonafide" artist, myself

I would question any success I have had. My aquascaping has been more of avalanche control than either Art or Science.

Ditto. I can't honestly answer this question. Even 100% fluke doesn't qualify . Therefore, I abstain.

Cheers,
