Yes you might end up cavitating the pump but how would you like water flowing at 4000 gph on your floor. Sorry. Didn't mean to hijack the thread just trying to help the man not lose his investment so fast.

Hate to jump in and add to the cross chatter (sort of a no-no), but, I have to have to add my $0.02. The best explanation I once heard is that "pumps push, they don't suck." Throttling the output is the same as having a higher return pipe (more head pressure). You don't need a safety release valve because the schedule-40 piping is rated to a much higher pressure than what the pump is outputting. Throttling the input will eventually damage the pump, whereas throttling the output is not only OK, the pump will consume less electricity because it's not turning as fast. Anyhow, that said, we shouldn't be discussing this in a buy/sell thread, if there's more to be said, let's start a new thread in the main forum, and leave this for selling the pump. Good luck with the sale!
