![]() I've had this tang for about a month and can't find anyone who can ID it . Any feedback or ideas would be great. This is a pic from when I first picked up the fish so its scratched up but since healed. Also the kind of white patch, on the back half is glare from the camera

![]() My best guess is a halfblack mimic tang. Check out http://www.marinecenter.com (sorry if the link doesn't work, I don't know how to post links) Just checked the link and it works Ya! Once you are on the website search for tangs and scroll through until you find it.

![]() Looks like its from the Acanthurus family. I'm basing this on the shape of the face, as well as the dorsal and ventral fins.
It also seems to have the same lines as the bristletooth tangs, or the Ctenochaetus family. Based on fishbase.org it looks to me like it may be one of the following. Click on the photo in the description for additional images. My best guess is grammoptilus at this point. Acanthurus grammoptilus (http://fishbase.org/Summary/speciesS...e=grammoptilus) Acanthurus randalli (http://fishbase.org/Summary/speciesS...sname=randalli) What was the fish sold to you as? |

Which leads me to my next question... How big is your tang? if it is small (under 3 inches) then maybe it is displaying a juvy coloration..... but i am no tang expert these are just my thoughts.....

![]() Looks like something acanthurus to me as well. Colouration does seem very similar to the bristletooth tang (Ctenochaetus tominiensis).

![]() it's approx 4" so possibly still juvi. I have noticed the fish changes to a light grey with bright orange fins when eating but I don't believe that has anything to do with age. Has a close resemblence to the finelined surgeon on the link from Michika. That link said that in an adult these have been known to reach 35cm!!! Man am I gonna need a new tank. It's in a 78 right now. Oh well I was looking for an excuse to upgrade. 35cm!!! I'm gonna need a 200+gal tank!
