Turf scrubber = refugium. Usually one filled with Chaeto or some other fast growing, nitrate absorbing macroalgae.

I stick to my No more the 5% rule.
In this hobby nothing should be sudden or quickly so small/Slow change is better for me.

Its a device that has an algae turf dump screen. It grows turf algae instead of the usual filter algaes. With no disrespect, a sump full of algae is not a turf scrubber but an algae filter.

The scrubber screen is exposed to air, as it fills and then dumps. This method is suppose to filter a lot better than just using macro algaes in a sump, but some of us beg to differ. I believe Inland Aquatics uses large scrubbers on most of their large breeding and coral systems.

My unit is in hibernation, as I only have a small tank. Perhaps someday I may use it again. Below is a pic of the scrubber screen and another of a new turf scrubber. I dont have any idea who sells them anymore. Legal issues regarding patents have put them to the side I guess.

Do the detritus build up in a easy to reach spot for you guys when performing water changes?

I have all my flow sort of organized so that the detritus is in two spots (for the most part). One spot is right under the powerheads and the other is in a weird spot under some rocks (never been able to get rid of this dead spot). Its amazing when you go BB how much detritus collects on the bottom. No wonder I could never keep a sandbed!
