I have the 2x96w fixture and the fans, while not silent, aren't loud. Just like Johnny Reefer mentioned above. The skimmer definitely puts out more decibals

remove them
i have seen a couple who have removed the fans and it doesn't affect them at all. The unit gets a little warm but not hot. Many people on RC have removed it without any side effects.
