Talking Another Camera Thread...

Im in the market for a new camera and am currently considering a Canon PowerShot Pro1 model. I have read the reviews at www.dpreview.com and done a fair bit of checking around but would like to hear some thoughts from those with first hand experience or with a fair bit of photography know how. Suggestions for other models instead would be fine too.

I'd love to get a DSLR personally but that will have to wait till further down the road. I need a camera right now that you can view the LCD to take the photo, have a decent macro mode, as well as be compact enough to take on a 5-week backpacking trip to Europe. Im leaning toward a "DSLR-Like" model but am not stuck on it.

Ryan.

Ryan, this is a GREAT camera. A few years ago, when I was contemplating purchasing a new camera, I settled between the Canon PowerShot Pro1 and the Nikon Coolpix 8800. I ended up going with the Nikon because of the Vibration Reduction feature. It's proven to be very helpful, especially at long-range zoom. I'm typically a Canon man, but I have been very impressed with the Nikon. No regrets.

At that time, they were right around the same price range, though I'm not certain their price comparison now.

I'd highly recommend any of the Canon models. Specially the powershot series. This has nothing to do with the fact that I shoot only with canon :P

Their dSLR's are great (I shoot weddings with a 20D), but if you're looking for compact, I'd maybe look at their S1, S2, S3 series or their new G7). The S3 is their improved model over the s1, s2 models, and comes with IS.
