1” hole in 10G tank

Nice and easy see, thats the way you do it!
When cutting a notch, I always drill a hole in each corner first..that way the inside corners are radiused and less prone to cracking.

It'll work, I drilled a five gallon with a 1" hole and it didn't crack. You just have to be careful, and make sure that the hole is approx. 2" from every side. I drilled mine for an above tank fuge.

What did you use to drill the glass?

I took it into AI in Edmonton, and used the press drill.
