The cross piece will limit the flow to the box if it's too small. I would got for the 12" that would be the same area as the 6"x6" and should leave you lots of room for a Stockman or Durso stand pipe. What kind of turn over are you thinking of? What return pump would you be using?
I have seen tanks with this style, they look sweet and clean lines. Lee
