I have always started my tanks out just adding salt to the tank water (before there is anything else in there) One thing you might want to do is use your tank heater and wait until the water is heated to about 78-80 degrees. The salt seems to dissolve better that way.
Also don't forget that you are going to be adding live rock (and sand if you are) so don't fill the tank all the way up as you will get water displacement as soon as you start adding those things.
