![]() It's a possibility that I may get my dads old fish tank (which is very exciting for me). I would like to know how many gallons it is. Does anyone know how to calculate gallons by the tank dimentions? It is 60 inches long 30 inches tall and 24 inches deep. So it's pretty big. I estimate I can fit at least 4 tanks the size of of my 55 gal in it. Also how much would a tank this size wiegh? I'd hate to have it end up in my basement. And one last thing, it is kinda old (at least 15 years) is there anything I should consider when filling/maintaining an older tank that size. It has not had water in it for many years either.
Thanks for any help. Last edited by MikeP; 07-09-2006 at 04:53 AM. |

![]() (Length x Width x Height) / 231 = approximate volume in gallons

![]() To calculate tank volume, do (LxWxH)/231. That should give you the approximate gallons the tank is.
Also, when using an old tank, you need to make sure the silicone is still in good shape. Its shouldn't be dry or cracked or anything like that. It should still be squishy. If the silicone shows any signs of weakening, you'll have to cut out all the old stuff, clean the glass at the bond points and resilicone the tank. If you are unsure whether or not your silicone is still "okay," fill it up outside and let it sit for a while and check the seams to make sure there are no signs of stress on them.
