There are also two different flow-through rates. The rate of the sump it is in, and the rate through the actual skimmer. Which one do you mean?

This is my guess as well! ReefGeek: You bring up a completely new subject  My best bet there, as long as the sump (overflow/return) is turning over enough water to surpass the skimmer, your skimmer will always be working
