Gramma question...

Royal Grammas, Is it best to keep in pairs or single? I've read that they may get territorial, however peaceful towards other tankmates. I've also read conflicting data that some people have pairs, and some do not because they may fight. Does anyone have experience with these fish?

I am looking to add one or two to my tank, however need some real-life experience data first

I guess it depends on how big your tank is. Mine is a 90 and I just keep one. I've never tried two though. My last one was quite territorial but mostly only to me, he would bite me when I tried to put my hand on "his side" of the tank

I'm really not quite sure, one minute he was giving me the gears as usual as I picked some caulerpa and algae out of the tank, the next minute he was upside down with his gills flared. I sort of wondered if he hadn't run into something accidentally and knocked himself out or eaten a bit of the floating algae and it got stuck. Either way he lingered for about 10 minutes and then died in spite of my efforts to revive him.

Since then I've gotten a new smaller gramma that doesn't seem to mind my hand in the tank. Not as much character as the last one but I'm sure he'll get crochety soon

They usually hate everybody from other fish, to their keepers, to themselves.

That being said, I do remember once reading about someone keeping pairs but not sure which kind.

Some have had success with keeping three Orchid dottybacks and the best is they can be purchased tank bred.
