Maybe not being a top flight computer weenie helps. I have run Norton AV for years, and pay every year for the privilege. I never have a problem, and have never gotten a virus.

I'm happy with the virus protection it offers.

I'm not happy with the firewall and other "security" features.

For the AV stuff, it's not bad.

But let's not even get into the rest of it...

Symantec Anti-Virus works really well, especially in a corporate environment. Easily managed, easily updated and had great reporting. We keep the virus definitions current, and it catches anything that gets into our intranet.
The actual management console crashes a lot, but a quick reinstall fixes it every time!!

seriously.. agv is a nice av package, it auto updates itself and catches things norton never did on my machine.. i actually trust agv on my download machine that trolls usenet and bit torrent sites. if you ever wanted to test out your av program hit usenet for a few hours and you will see it kick into high gear. the machine has been up and running for over a year running agv and spybot with no firewall. never had a problem.

We've been VERY disapointed with Norton 2k4 and 2k5 to the point that we've stopped selling it. We have been running and selling Panda Titanium for over a year now with very few problems. It is a far smaller package than Norton, updates more frequently and finds more virii. Extremly pleased with the product. The new 2k5 comes with adware scans and a firewall. Don't bother installing the firewall. Any 3rd party firewalls tend to have issues if the XP firewall is running. Also any software firewall can be hacked by any 15 yr old kid by downloading tools off the internet. If you want firewall, buy a router. They are cheap and 1000% more effective than any software firewall will ever be, and they do not use any system resources.

If your cheap, I agree that AVG is good. But you get what you pay for. The free versions are usually further behind in their updates than the corpprate guys.

Norton says it will have a fix for any new virus within 3 days. Their live update file is usually only updated every Tuesday. You can go and manually grab the new definitions. The nice thing about Panda is, they guarantee a fix within 3 hours of discovering a new virus and their definitions are updated immediately. There have been many days where I have seen my Panda notice pop up 3-8 times over the course of a day with 3-20 new virus definitions each time. We're quite impressed.

There is an issue with Panda 2k5 and AMD 64's but the patch to correct it is available on their website.

If you would like to check out your system with their free online scan (which last time I checked was still removing found virii at no cost) go to
www.pandasoftware.com

Hope that helps.

Exactly .........

Anyhow, about 12 hours later, my network seems to be OK. File sharing OK (not sure what happened, just spontaneously started working). Finally got RTS going on the media PC. Got SP2 installed. Got the DivX codec going in MCE. I'm soooo almost there, yippeee!!

Except that now my sound doesn't work.
Stuck on mute. {sigh} Oh well, I guess I can lip read when I watch TV while I figure out what the .... happened there.

I know, I have had to uninstall it off 3 of the computers your store down here sold due to conflicts. I don't really understand the problem with Norton I have been using both products for 5 or more years and I still like them. never a conflict, if a special virus is found they put out a special update. I don't find they are hogs at all, well I used to but that was when I had an underpowered computer for what I was doing.

Up and boy are they fun to set up if you want to do more than brows web pages. very time consuming and if you don't know what your doing with ports ect.. then this is not the option for you.
