I did a similar thing but I cut 1/2 inch PVC in short little sections and then put them on end and put 3 or 4 under my rock so each rock was suspended off the bottom of the tank. Critters could move under the rock with no worries about it falling over. I cut some in 1" lengths, some in 1.5" and some in 2" sections, it worked out well. The main reason I did it was because I had so much excess PVC laying around. But, it worked out well, and I'll probably use the same system again.
