platform for liverock
 

I'm planning on a 1-2 inch sandbed but I'm planning on putting the rocks in first to make them more stable. I'm planning on putting eggcrate at the bottom so there isn't any rocks to glass contact. Assemble my rock structure, then fill in the sand. Is this a good idea or are there other ways?

Since your sand is so low, I'd do the same.

Sounds good to me.

Keep in mind the size of the egg crate if you keep any sand dwellers. IE, if you keep snails, gobies, snapping shrimp that like to go into the sand I'd cut my egg crate small enough that it's just under the rock not under all the sand.

Just my two cents worth.

or you could put the large borader rock on the sand and not worry about it. it is not likely that anything we keep in our tanks will burrow enuf to tople rocks if ou put large ones on the bottom.

I was also thinking of drilling a good size hole through each cell of the eggcrate so sand circulation isn't hindered much at all. What do yous all think?

I did a similar thing but I cut 1/2 inch PVC in short little sections and then put them on end and put 3 or 4 under my rock so each rock was suspended off the bottom of the tank. Critters could move under the rock with no worries about it falling over. I cut some in 1" lengths, some in 1.5" and some in 2" sections, it worked out well. The main reason I did it was because I had so much excess PVC laying around. But, it worked out well, and I'll probably use the same system again.

Well, that isnt exactly true =). I have an adult pistol shrimp who has decided that his home was going to be under my 50#+ boulder. He has made a bunch of tunnels under there and now the boulder does have sections touching the glass. I'm not worried about it because there are no other rocks on top of it that can fall.

By mistake (LFS advise) my substrate started as finger sized CC. Eventually I removed most of it and made eggcrate boxes (panels zip tied) with the bottoms open. Placed these over the remaining CC placed the LR on that.

I then added a DSB to the front and sides of the LR and sand where I could easily see the crating between the rocks. Ended up with a bit of a pod pile under and behind the rocks and the LR is on a stable base.
