I'm not entirely certain what the intent of your post was. I was providing insight into the potential pitfalls of using polyester fiber fill from an uncertain source. I actually use it in my overflow to get rid of the cascading water sound - not as a filter material per se but it obviously does filter some large particulate (the layout of my false wall negates the use of your typical Durso or Herbie overflow). The position of the open cell foam (previously polyester fiber) doesn't make any difference with respect to particulate returning to the display as it's placed in the baffle where my skimmer intake is and where detritus accumulates for easy removal.
