Default Euro-Reef RS-100 skimmer question

Hey guys, can you help me out? I'm trying to put together and understand my new Euro-Reef RS-100 protein skimmer. The opening of the outlet (water return) pipe (which is 5 3/4" long) when fitted inside the water return tee, is only 1/2" off the ground. It says that I should trim or adjust the position of the outlet pipe so that the bottom where the water exits is above the water level. It also says the ideal water level in the sump for optimal skimmer performance is between six and eight inches. So. They're saying the bottom of the outlet pipe should be atleast 6" high? Should I just leave the elbow & outlet water pipe off and let the water come out of the water return tee? The opening of the tee is 7 1/2" off the ground, so I'll have 1 1/2" clearance if the water level in my sump is 6". Also, the foam level adjustment pipe comes up to exactly the top of the collecting cup lid. In the manual (diagram) it only rises halfway up the collecting cup. Should I trim it down, or leave it as is? Thanks.
