Yeah, I have seen that. I always take batteries out as well.
Its a mess to clean up in an apparatus, and if the corrosion is bad your equipment is toast. I have a pile of batteries that look just like that waiting for me to take to a recycler. Do they even take dry cells? Oh and that looks like a cut list, making the most of a length of steel.
