I read something a long time ago about supersaturation and excess zooxanthallae with too much light. It prompted me to reduce my photoperiod to between 5 and 7 hours. I get much better colors than I used to. I currently run 7 with LED, but my MH were on for 6.
No idea about growing at night. It could be, I know we build and repair tissue when we sleep
