Multiple photo periods

Does anyone run multiple photo periods of a shorter time on there sps reefs

Eg. 2 4 hour periods

I did some reading on this and people claimed faster growth but no pics to show

Like 4hrs on 6hrs off 4 on?

Proteus 02-07-2013 05:45 PM

Exactly

The theory is that the corals ability to process light into food after certin amount of peak light hours requiring it to shut down. So after a rest it can process again

Apparently by increasing cycles you would double growth rate. Basically two years of growth in one

Interesting theory and does make some sense. I may have to try that next time I go on holidays

Proteus 02-07-2013 05:49 PM

I am thinking of trying it. Just want to know if other people do

Check out gaslamp method. Though its done for plants people report crazy growth while using less light. Sometimes less is more.

i've always wondered about this.... 6 hours on 6 hours off, repeat..

If you do go ahead with this Titus please heavily document the growth - I would be very interested in teh results.

Does anyone know about light saturation at different kelvin

Proteus 02-07-2013 11:13 PM

i made a program for the radion. its 6 on 6 off with half hour ramp up and down for each period.giving it 5 hours peak. its 18k @ 90% which is the intensity now. i am going to take some notes and pics and implement this program tonight. i may adjust length of peak intenstiy as it goes on

on a side not i just read without any proof that sps grow there skeletons at night. can anyone comment or verify this

I read something a long time ago about supersaturation and excess zooxanthallae with too much light. It prompted me to reduce my photoperiod to between 5 and 7 hours. I get much better colors than I used to. I currently run 7 with LED, but my MH were on for 6.

No idea about growing at night. It could be, I know we build and repair tissue when we sleep :)
