Inexpensive source of filter foam?

Has anyone discovered a cheaper source of filter foam/sponge than the LFS's

$18 for a 12" x 6" block at IA is the best I've found in Calgary and it goes up from there

. Seems an exorbitant amount to pay for a piece of foam. If anyone has found a suitable alternative say a mattress manuf. or cleaning supply place etc.. please share with the class
