On a six foot tank I would thing 2.5 to 3 inches of 3/8 or 1/2 inch glass would be enough. Now don't forget I base that on no real knowledge just my own experience in building the tanks I have.

I have a 230g and mine is 1/2" glass and about 3in wide.

Yep still going good, With all the silicone we used its silliconed to everything even the stand theres no way it will ever let go.
