If it is a DC motor, a transformer won't do diddly. Those are for AC. Please don't try mixing DC and AC; the results will be disasterous. Kablammo!

Depending on amperage you could use a simple 12 VDC wall wart (a type of power supplypower supply... like the black boxes that you find on laptop power cords, etc). I think this is what you mean by a transformer maybe? A 12 VDC wall wart that plugs into a 120 VAC outlet should be no more than a few bucks at radioshack, walmart, etc. Make sure you get a supply that can handle 1.7 A.
