Is there a more reliable pump for the money? If the Mags aren't totally reliable then I'd rather spend half as much for a powerhead--I only need 2-300GPH at 2' head.

Personally, I'm partial to Eheims. The do cost more, but I think their worth it since they are designed to be run externally, use much less electricity and are bulletproof. A 1048 would be appropriate for your application.

The simplest option is perhaps running something like a Quietone internally. Mags are notrious for running extremely hot.
