Not really old style, probably new style if anything. Also it's typical to do this if the bottom is tempered, otherwise the sides could chip the bottom ultimately causing it to explode.

Valve is downstairs tank is upstairs... certainly won't be as easy as typical setups and the large pressure on the valve means the slightest turn will make a big difference. I did it that way as well...
