Sea Hare odd behavior?

I'v had a Sea Hare for almost a week now, and he's been doing fine up until today, when I walked in from work and found him buried under about an inch of sand. He still has portions of his body...

Diatom filter

Does anyone know if this will filter out silicates or silicic acid from the water of the main tank?

If not, what type of compound can be used to filter these out of the water?

I'v spent most of this time taking needless readings that showed 0's in everything bad. The rock was pretty much cured when I got it, so there shouldn't have been...
