my scrubber is built the same way sitting on my sump with 2" clearance to the top of my stand.i've never had any problem while or after changing.it almost sounds like your o2 is very low in your tank...

they run without ballasts-direct wiring.i have a bunch of them that are 18 watt-low par-about 17 at 6".the best mini moonlight i've found are from fishbowl innovations-$70-$100 for an ion moonlight...
