I'd leave the skimmer on but have it overflow...
I'd leave the skimmer on but have it overflow back into the tank, if possible. That's what I did anyhow. It was basically unable to skim properly anyhow, but I figure the air exchange is still good...

Salt buckets work pretty good for that sort of thing though, and odds are you'll have a half dozen of those before long in this hobby anyhow.. I find that the size of system makes a big difference...
