Can anyone identify what this is?

We have a couple of spots of what looks like jelly-like packets of what, we don't know. The are white with some opaque, some transparent areas. They have not grown or changed since we got the tank 2 months ago. Just curious what they may be. I have tried taking a pic with not great luck but here it is. There is a couple of these spots right in the middle of the shot.

I had something like that (and still do)....Maybe someone will know

.....mine is more white and I think that mine is sponge. I have lots of it growing in my sump. I am not sure if that is what you have though.

Can you get a closer up picture?

bvlester 02-21-2010 08:44 PM

could be a couple of things spunges.

May even be a very small rock Nem that comes out at night they have some color to them. check at night with a flashlight to see, if it is one of the little rock Nems they are harmless and only come out at night they do not like light. They syay small I have a coulpe in my tank right now one has purple or blue huw to it and the other has a bit of brown tint to it. These two are now atapsia or mojano I've poste pics before and have confemed this. Besides atapsia and Mojano will come out during the day in bright light these other one do not like light.

A better pic would help?

I would guess they are blue sponges....hard to see it.... a closer pick would be great!
I should also get my eyes checked... apparently I can't read either.

If they have the shape of a pinnapple then they are pinnapple sponges.

I had a bunch of those pineapple sponges on some live rock that i bought now just a couple are on my rocks and the rest moved down to the sump.
Are they good to have?

Yes leave them as they are good. Will wax/wane depending on the nutrients in the tank.

Will do! Thanks

I've tied 6 different cameras now and various lighting conditions and still not able to get anything closer. Even in Photoshop, I'm not able to pull anything better than that pic right now.

These are not the pineapple sponges though I do have some of those as well.

I've been "stalking" the tank too to find if anything comes out of them at night with no luck on there either.

It also doesn't look like blue sponges when I google those. They are quite white/greyish actually.

Thanks for the ideas though, keep them coming. One day we'll figure this out or I'll get my hands on a better camera. One or the other....

Might have to dig out the trusty 35mm camera next, LOL.

I'd be happy if this is a sponge BLOB.

ScubaSteve 02-26-2010 05:36 PM

I have those too. They are a sponge but I haven't been able to ID them exactly. They are harmless and, if they are the same as the ones I have, they go through some cool morphological changes as they mature. Keep 'em!

Here's a few more pics of the same thing. FINALLY had success with googling the camera macro online and got some tips. I wanted to ask about the little "grove" in the middle of the larger one too. The original pic didn't show it well at all but these ones do. Anyone know what they are? Another type of tube worm?

And then there is this yellow "stuff". We are getting more and more of it. Should we be concerned? Been googling with no luck on it either.

These are a little cluster of our tube worms. We already know what they are but I took a pic just because I finally had the camera settings figured out. We like 'em.

Cool! I can't wait to see it.

ETA: Oops, my bad. I didn't see the pics on the second page :( glad they were ID'ed though!

I believe that these are from the tunicate family. I have similar looking ones in my tank that came on my live rock. They were almost transparent with a bright greenish yellow ring around the top. They seem to come and go. I had no idea what they were until I saw a pic of them from another web site. Search on google images and you can see some of the many different types there are.

I would now say they are ball spunges and there looks to be 3 peanut worms in one of the pic #2 or could be small polups the wild ones. The yellow stuff is eithere spunge or coriline algae. coriline algae is not always purple there is a gray, skin color, red, orange , green and yellow by the looks of yours. All good. Purple coriline algae comes in different types the standard and plating. The purple is what most hobbiest want as it is nice but I like a veriety with mostly purple. sponges come in all colors black, purple, blue, orange, yellow, red, white, green and pink. I do like ball spunges as they change as they get older.

Thank you for the replies. Been a mad frenzy of googling the last few days. I've been learning tons from you guys.

Found a couple more of these things. I apologize, the first pic is not the greatest (it's in a cave) and I had to use a flashlight making them more yellow than they actually are. The second one is quite different than the others in my tank. The original ones that I posted before all look the same, they haven't changed a bit.
