I'm going with two.

But in my case I want areas of lower light. I've got two 175w over there now in a four foot fixture, (to be replaced by 2 400w ) and I really like the look, there is certainly no noticable darkness.

no, DE's are good for 2x2 max, if you were using SE you could streach it out but not with DE's.
