stitching 2 photos into 1

does any one know how to do it or is it even possible i got 2 shots i would like to turn into full tank shot for early 2010

Not that I know much about it but im pretty sure both your 'halves' should be directly from the front of each portion, just cause looking at the connecting pieces, some of the corals are at different angles (cause you took both shots moreso 'from' the tank's 'center'?). try to take them both from right head-on in the middle of each half I think, and maybe a tad further back? Might make it easier to do. You can probably test how it works out even in a program like paint or pain shop pro. Would be crude but would give you an idea of what your working with.

Best way to do it is stand in one spot, rotate from left to right (or right to left) making sure that each successive photo has a fair bit of overlap with the previous. Some cameras have a stitch assist mode to help you line up the features. If yours doesn't have that then make sure that maybe around 25%-33% (1/4 to 1/3) of the photos overlap. Also you don't want too wide of an angle with the zoom (ie., zoom in a little) so that it doesn't distort out towards the edges.

Next use a photo stitcher software. If you don't have one, Microsoft has one you can download for free called "ICE".

I'm using this one myself and like it. It has a couple different stitching algorithms in case one doesn't work (sometimes the angling can be hard to compensate for).

I wasn't able to stitch the two photos you posted, possibly they are too far apart. My suggestion is try again but use at least 3, maybe even 4 photos for the same overall image and it will probably work a lot better.

With fish tanks stitched or composite panoramics always are interesting since fish move around and end up showing up in multiple spots in the tank. Or end up being half-ghost. So try a couple different times and have some fun with it.

+1, microsoft Ice is very nice stiching software and it is free. I did come panaramics of a lake and various other places when I was in italy and crete that were made of 5 pictures.

if you take two directly from the front using a tri-pod or a table and just rotate the camera a little the stitch turns out way better, i use Photoshop to do it, but those others will work too

I've also used the Microsoft ICE application to stitch photos for panoramic scenes, sometimes used up to 5 photos. Not a bad app for something that's available free and fairly easy to use, intuitive. The only issue I envision is the speed at which you take the sequence shots. As long as the fish hold still and don't happen to be in the transition area to be stitched, you'll be ok. For a scene with corals only, should be no problem. A fast camera will help as well.

Here's a link to a photoshare from a recent trip to the backcountry. It contains a number of MS ICE stitched panoramic views. After having used ICE a few times, I now pre-plan many shots by taking several photos in sequence with the intent of making them easier to stitch. Most of the photos are single frames, but you should be able to pick out the panoramas... I think I have them noted as such in the narrative for each.
