Tap or Filtered Water for a Reef?

I was discussing this with my wife the other night about using tap water or filtered water for a reef tank. I have a 90 gallons mix reef and a 55 softies only and using filtered water only. My next door neighbor is using tap water for all his saltwater tanks, is that ok to use tap water for a reef or for any saltwater setup?
